A clear pattern has emerged in which the oppressors and colonizers of the Kurds promote certain individuals as supposed “representative Kurds,” yet are used to promote narratives that directly contradict broad Kurdish political interests and aspirations.
The dynamic often involves assigning, or strategically highlighting, a Kurdish identity for a person, after which they are pushed into the media landscape as outspoken critics of Kurdish rights, self-determination, or historical claims.
What stands out is the consistency of the pattern is a sudden or manufactured Kurdish identity, disproportionate media exposure despite lacking legitimacy in Kurdish communities, messaging that aligns neatly with the interests of external political actors, and frequently, personal incentives such as money, visibility, glamorous lifestyle or career advancement.
Individuals commonly cited in this context include:
- Taayoub Jash Azoud
- Jasmine Nammou (all of a sudden Kurd)
- Hakan Jash Fidan
- Faten Jash Ramadan (previously a supporter of Assad, then Jolani)
The issue is not their ethnicity in itself, but the way their constructed or amplified identities are used as instruments in broader political strategies, tools in the struggle over narratives, legitimacy, and public perception. Therefore, the free press must be conscious of its responsibility for credibility when giving a platform to individuals who, despite opposing the interests and aspirations of the Kurds, present themselves as Kurdish representatives.
