The United States needs a functioning democracy to pass needed legislation, maintain a robust economy, & preserve stability at home & broad-but Americans will only get one if rights are balanced with obligations. Hence my new book: The Bill of Obligations. penguinrandomhouse.com/books…
Trump Says He Will Raise Global Tariff to 15 Percent nytimes.com/2026/02/21/busin… via @NYTimes
The president is throwing a tariff tantrum in the wake of the Scotus decision. It will not help the American economy, but it will further damage US standing in the world, leading friends & allies to increase their trade with others, including China.
The Trump administration is signaling it may opt for a limited strike against Iran, but keep in mind limited strikes tend to have limited military and diplomatic impact-and Iran gets a vote in whether to keep any conflict limited.
i know it's never going to happen, but it would have been good just once to hear this Potus say "of course i'm disappointed with the tariff decision, but one of the things that makes America great is our system of checks & balances and the independence of our highest court.
Scotus tariff decision good for American democracy, US economy, & our alliances. any impact on deficit/debt modest given other contributing factors and could be offset by resulting lower inflation & higher economic growth.
What is being contemplated vis-a-vis Iran would be a war of choice in a region where recent wars of choice proved disastrous. It all adds up to an enormous, unnecessary, and ill-advised risk.

.@SecRubio delivered a thoughtful, reassuring speech at the MSC. His answer in Ukraine was similarly thoughtful. The problem he could not resolve is the disconnect between his comments & much of the foreign policy of the Trump administration.
much more troubling than the expiration of New Start is the likelihood more countries will want to join the nuclear weapons club as threats grow & their confidence in US security guarantees fades
Richard Haass considers the troubling implications of the expiration of New START, the last remaining nuclear arms accord. project-syndicate.org/commen…
Laws are not enough. Shame-the awareness that what you are contemplating doing will hurt your reputation-can be a powerful constraint on bad behavior. Unfortunately, it is fast fading, making for one more reason American democracy is in mounting trouble. open.substack.com/pub/richar…
“Today, unfolding situations in three places have put regime change back on the table: Venezuela, Gaza, and Iran. Cuba has the potential to be a fourth,” writes @RichardHaass.

The immediate crisis over Greenland seems to be over. But no one should think we are where we were. Doubts about this president & country are fast multiplying. Regime change is taking place internationally; it will leave the US & the world much worse off. open.substack.com/pub/richar…
Regime change as a policy “ought to be embraced rarely,” argues @RichardHaass. “Washington should focus more on reacting to and supporting transformative change within other countries when the opportunity arises than on acting to create it.”

exactly. analysis is not advocacy. plus there are serious questions about the timing & tactics of the opposition. a strong case can be made that the context in Iran not yet ripe for regime change. so bringing matters to a head premature & as we've seen dangerous
This weekend, President Trump announced new 10% tariffs on European allies he says are opposing his push to acquire Greenland.
In part 1 of our conversation, I asked @CFR_org President Emeritus @RichardHaass & @newamerica CEO @SlaughterAM what this showdown means for the transatlantic alliance:
The idea of “regime change” is back at the center of foreign policy debates, as the US weighs its options in Iran and Venezuela.
When does pressure work, and when does it backfire?
In part 2 of our conversation, I spoke with two former directors of policy planning at the US State Department @RichardHaass & @SlaughterAM:
On GPS, @ 10am & 1pm ET on @CNN: I’ll discuss Venezuela, Iran & the dangers of regime change w/ @CFR_org Pres. Emeritus @RichardHaass & @NewAmerica Pres. & CEO @SlaughterAM; Iran’s protests & brutal crackdown w/ Narges Bajoghli of @SAISHopkins; and Pres. Trump’s feud w/ Fed Chair Powell & the ramifications of DOJ’s new investigation w/ fmr Goldman Sachs CEO @lloydblankfein

The worst thing about what we did in Venezuela (besides selling out the democratic opposition) is that it persuaded this POTUS he can do no wrong-and now he is overreaching & causing great harm in Iran, in Greenland & Europe, & to America's global reputation & standing.
