A group of Brazilians who organized to fight in Ukraine's war are facing accusations of murder and are under investigation for allegedly running a systematic torture regime within their unit. They lead a formation known as Advanced Company (or "Advanced"), which operates as part of Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) structure, within the International Legion.
On the night of December 28–29, 2025, 28-year-old Bruno Gabriel Leal da Silva, from Pernambuco, Brazil, was found dead at the unit's temporary base near Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the discovery and opened a pre-trial investigation into the death as a "potential crime." According to a Kyiv Independent investigation and accounts from former members (speaking anonymously due to fears of retaliation), Leal da Silva, who had not yet signed a formal contract and was reportedly trying to leave and return home, died after a brutal "disciplinary" beating, possibly lasting around 40 minutes, for returning to base intoxicated. His body, showing signs of torture and with hands tied, was reportedly discovered in the snow outside the base the next morning.
Former fighters and victims have described a pattern of severe abuse within Advanced Company, led by Brazilian national Leanderson Paulino (accused by multiple sources of overseeing and participating in the mistreatment). Alleged practices include beatings, waterboarding (or mock drowning), burnings with hot liquids, electric shocks, restraints, prolonged deprivation of food/water, passport confiscation, delayed or withheld payments, threats, and even sexual assault using objects.
Witnesses characterized the unit as one where "abuse was normal" and "torture" was routine for enforcing discipline. The Brazilian government is monitoring the situation and has reiterated its strong advisory against Brazilians joining foreign armed forces. Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) has stated that Leal da Silva was a candidate in the selection process, confirmed an internal review is underway, and emphasized that any violations will be addressed.
This case has drawn coverage from outlets like the Kyiv Independent (which conducted an in-depth probe) and Brazilian media such as SBT News, highlighting concerns over foreign fighter units and command accountability in the ongoing conflict.
