"The 9,000 Who Never Made It Home" was a temporary, large-scale sand art installation created in September 2013 on Arromanches beach, Normandy, to honor those who died on D-Day (June 6, 1944).
Artists Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss, with 500 volunteers, etched 9,000 silhouettes into the sand, which were washed away by the tide.
