Andrew Neil nails it this morning
by bringing us back down
to earth with thump.
We’ve all been enjoying the soap opera.
Princes imploding.
Starmer clinging on.
Mandy hired and fired.
Doyle lorded and folded.
Chagos as dead as a Dodo.
Simons, APCO smearing Journos.
Local election cancellation u-turns.
Directions to the Civil Service.
And now an alliance fracture.
Sleaze.
Scandals.
And Sackings.
Wall-to-wall Westminster theatre.
A series of unprecedented stories
arriving in such a short time is
without precedent too.
It’s gripping.
It’s also a distraction.
Because while we’re doom scrolling the drama…
Labour’s Operation Gaslight is in full swing.
Inflation?
Still 50% above target.
Higher than the G7.
Yet we’re told it’s 'falling' because of 'choices'.
I am not sure the Government is capable
of choosing anything anymore.
Interest rates?
Still the highest in the G7.
Cut more slowly than elsewhere
because inflation was allowed to reignite.
Jobs?
Unemployment up, up and away!
Youth unemployment is now
worse than the EU which is
yes, you guessed it...
Unprecedented.
While Labour say, let’s talk about 'hope'.
Housing?
The 1.5 million homes pledge
is already as dead as
Mandy's and Andy's
old pal Epstein.
Starts flat.
Completions down.
Construction shrinking.
What about defence?
Europe is rearming.
We are posturing.
0.2% here.
A vague promise there.
No urgency.
No roadmap.
No seriousness.
And now, in an incident I think is
potentially more serious than Suez...
Starmer has blocked the US from using our
bases in a move that's (checks notes)
Yes, Unprecedented.
This is the Labour trick.
Keep the headlines loud.
Keep the scandals blazing.
Keep the soap opera addictive.
So nobody notices that...
Their living standards are
being washed into the gutter.
But when the noise fades...
People will look at their mortgage,
their rent,
their food bill,
their job prospects…
…and realise the drama wasn’t the story.
The 'boring' stuff was.
And on the boring stuff?
Labour is failing worse than at
any time I can remember.
Andrew’s right.
The real rude awakening
hasn’t even begun yet.
Enjoy the weekend!
